What do you think about Ubuntu Roughcut t-shirts?

You might know that I'm the guy who printed out Ubuntu case badges for the community before, and later posters (http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php?page=poster).

Now I'm working on t-shirts, using Brian Burger's Roughcut design (http://doc.ubuntu.com/~marketing/DIY%20Material/Ubuntu_Posters_Roughcut/Ubuntu-roughcut.png) (AKA OBEY Ubuntu Posters).

They would have the entire poster across the back, and the front would look a bit like the attached image. The actual t-shirt on the image is the type I'd be getting. It's the second best the company in question offers.

Material: 5% 'elasten' in collar, otherwise 100% cotton. 200 g/m², reinforced shoulders, double seams, no seams on torso, 'Single Jersey' whatever that means.
All in all, it's the high quality t-shirt among the offer.
The production cost would be around $6 when making 100 pcs. Shipping would cost $3.50 worldwide, if the packages were less than 250g, $5.50 if it was more. If I charged $15 apiece, I'd need to sell at least 53 pcs to break even.

How many of you would buy a neat, B&W Ubuntu t-shirt?

Given that the originals of these images are in SVG, it's easy enough to swap colours around, so a brown design on a tan t-shirt is possible, if Jenda can arrange the t-shirt colour. (Doing just one colour of shirt would be easier & cheaper, I'm sure - I'm leaving that part of the process up to Jenda, though!)

Jenda, for the small Ubuntu logo on the front of the shirt, how about using the Roughcut version of the logo, with the rough edges & 'printing errors'? I'll produce an image with just the logo, if you like.

I prefer Ubuntu's own branding. It's simpler, and speaks more for what it stands for. Tux just stands for an operating system. Or a kernel, even. Ubuntu is much more, IMO.

I think the brown colors are much prettier. I think the dark brown with the light logo will do better on most people's skin tones, despite the fact that I just think the reverse looks cooler.

But don't count me in on your count of getting to 53 :( I'm assuming that this shirt is a cut in a guy's style, and I don't like to wear guy's shirts myself. But do start out with just guys, and add girl Ts later if they fly off the "shelves." I'm not so sexist I don't see the wisdom in that. ;) I think they'll look fantastic, though! :)

Anyway, Daynah, I've asked them if you still get bulk discounts if you get yourself different numbers of the same print on different t-shirt types. So if they offer girl-cut tees, I'll be sure to get some too.

Good news for the Ubuntu girls out there: they have female cuts too.
Bad news: only in black or white - so if brown gets chosen, I'll get a few brown-on-white prints for you.

I like darker brown myself, but would probably buy a shirt in that color if the ubuntu logo was dark enough. Printing a three color logo on it would be cool too. I know that screen print for three colors is more expensive though, but in my opinion better. I would still buy one.

depends on bulk, the more you order the less it will cost. (also depends on who you are ordering from)

The link I posted is NOT the most affordable option, it only offers to anyone for any reason to design, have made and order that one-of-a-kind shirt that they always wanted, that would be their unique design. (I am sure there most be hundreds of options for this?)

For those not so picky, I encourage them to buy directly from you:

1. Your designs are awesome!
2. You can buy at bulk and pass on the savings


with That said we can always research the most affordable options but I am sure you have put alot of time and effort into this already....thus another cost saving feature to buy directly from you.

I think the brown/beige T is ace. Did you say it has the poster on the back? I'd imagine that just the Ubuntu logo on the front would have a cheaper setup cost and ergo be cheaper for us guys with no money ;)

Thanks for the votes in the poll. It seems this project is doable, once again. I'll start once I sell out of posters, at latest, unless someone picks it up (nudge, nudge):
The market probing is done: there is a market for at least 40 shirts at full price and 30 at $10 - which, deducting shipping, nets $580, and that, in turn, covers expenses in my calculations, for 100 shirts.
I'm not sure how to make it possible for people to buy at either $15 or $10. I think that $10 purchases will open up say 3 months later than $15 ones, and will get slower shipping. $10 purchases are for people who want to buy the shirt... $15 purchases are for those who wish to support the project.

I'm much inclined to print black, first, however.

The race is on for who can provide these shirts first. I am working on providing them, but the people I was in contact with for making them did not fall through. My company just got a new client, so I have been out of the Ubuntu loop for a while. Once I get a reliable source to make the shirts at a good price (that will not fade as soon as you wash them), I will post. The count is up to 30+ people that would order one. I plan to have something before 7.10. Sorry for the delays.

Well since nobody else picked up the ball here I put some together on CafePress for lack of a better medium.

Here's a brown on brown shirt, there are also white polo's, long sleeves, and other shirt designs. I opt'd not to "Select All" so there aren't mugs, hats, blah-de-blahs.... If you want any of that post on this thread and I'll gladly add whatever you desire. I limited the inventory to what people had mentioned on this thread AND what limits CafePress had.
