I came about this on launchpad: https://features.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/bumptop-3d-desktop

Watch the video.... You'll start wondering what we're doing messing around with beryl for!

That is pretty cool, very dynamic. I'd love to see someone competent working on this for linux. But only someone that can get the job done. Don't want someone half-assing some kind of port just for kicks.

Bumptop is pretty funny, but not reeeeally that useful for managing a whole system. Having it as a possibility might be nice for people who only log on to use some office programs or stuff like that...I still think that Nautilus is faster for most people.

I'm glad that people are exploring different kinds of desktops though.

Just had a little discussion in irc about it, its DEFINATELY something for tablet pcs... but may be quite awkward using keyboard and mouse on a standard pc, who knows. Either way, I want to try it! :)

Yes, it looks cool, and it would be nice as an optional feature, but if this is included by default... Well, bad things will happen. It's one of those features that have no practical use, and just confuse people.

oh yeah, of course. Default would be a nightmare, no doubt. But this is definitely useful for tablet pc's. And any user with Linux on a tablet will already be searching for a way to make it bearable, and will no doubt find out about this.

But nonetheless, we're getting ahead of ourselves here ;)

demolition derby for the desktop.

edit: who wants their computer to be as messy as their lives?

Yeah! You should be able to drive small (rc like) cars on the desktop that crashes into stuff etc

Honestly while it's a neat thing eyecandywise it's not really useful imo, we're still using 2d screens  .

With that said I really like how they can group/flick through etc files and I think that could be really useful for tablets/handhelds etc...

This is extremely old. Bump Top sux, it is alot of fun to play around with but hard to organize. The real future desktop is the multi-input touch screen (it's on youtube somewhere, don't feel like looking).

it may be useful for tablets, but I have a handheld and there's only so much screenspace.

I think it would be cool for searches, but not very applicable at all... Just the idea of searching for a word and getting to flick around instead of scroll... scroll... scroll... etsy.com has something sorta like (search and flick) where you get to click on a color you like and some merchendise in that color pop up, and yyou just kinda throw them around the screen whereever you want.

Very cool. I wonder what the system requirements would be. Any ideas?

40" monitor would help.

Very Minority Report like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89sz8ExZndcVery cool.

Just not the same sort of innovation that i think my OP shows... standard single input touchscreens could do a lot of that, its no real extension.

Loved the real world bit though... reminds me of Black and White.

I thought MacSlow (http://macslow.thepimp.net/) was working on something like this for picture management. Lowfat? or Lofat? I tried to check, but I couldn't get to his site.

What's so funny about that? Doesn't everyone work like that?

[LOL]

Seriously, I don't think this would be that useful in general, but would probably very good in certain areas, maybe in image organization and editing.

I want to see something that can learn relationships between data the same way a collegue would. Notice that this request is completely independent of the method of handling the data, i.e. a CLI could do it, as well as a WIMP interface or this thing.

Handling data is not the problem. Making sense of it is.

Cool, etc. but useless.
I'd only use it to entertain myself for some minutes. But I'd prefer to play an FPS, etc. than crash icons or make piles with icons.
