How long has it been?

To roughly quote a linux book I have somewhere:
once you've issued this command, take a coffee break. Take two coffee breaks for that matter. Well, while you're at it, go out for a nice dinner and stay after the meal and chat for a while :)

Yes, it does take a while.

I snuck over to my old man's house to plug in to his network so I can get my wireless crap working at my place (my tenant has a wireless network :) and I comp him on the rent for use )

Told the wife I'd be back in 30-40 minutes and I think I'm in the dog house.... [-X

Ontop of that I'm crossing my fingers hopping the wiki Howto works :)

but at least I figured a few (minor) things out on my own

As the lines fly by are there any signs that I'm getting close to done

On my celeron 400 it takes over 4 hours. On my P4 2.66GHZ it takes a bit under an hour.

Well my Sony Vaio 256 mb RAM and AMD athlon processor it took about 2 hours.

Odd thing about my processor in windows unber settings it shows as a Athlon 1Ghz and when I run test and check it; it's a 500?

I've spent the last three days brushing up on processors and hardware.
it's been 8 years since I've dug into a home machine and there's alot of cobb-webs

I started another post about building a machine.....

Doing the math I can't tell just yet what's the most cost effective, some companies like dell throw out some deals...?

damn you guys must have a lot of modules still in there. my 1.7ghz pentium m w/ 512 ram compiles it in less than 15 minutes. i've probably built it about 20 times, each time removing more and more stuff i don't need.

it really depends on your kernel configuration.
I try to use the kernel that ships with the distro as long as I am not forced to compile my on. Once I will compile my own I will try to throw out everything I don't need.

SCSI and RAID and a bunch of network cards... for example.

I got Pentium-M 1.3G (The Centrino how they call it)

~30minutes to do make modules.
