Hey everyone. At my high school, seniors must do this really large project to graduate that we call the Sr Exit Project. I decided to do mine on the entire Open Source community, and the concept behind free software for and by the people.

I've been using Ubuntu/Linux for several months now so my knowledge is still quite close to nothing ;) . Just wondering if anyone can give me some help through some handy links about the history of Unix, Linux, BSD, The GNU Project, etc. It would help me so much :D

Later down the road I will need to do some interviews. Hope some of you don't mind any of this

There are 2 parts to open software. There is gnu and linux. This link tells it better than I can. http://www.gnu.org/gnu/thegnuproject.html
This is a mailing list 'argument' between linus and Dr Tanenbaum. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/opensources/book/appa.html It may be of interest. It is a 'sideline' but interesting. Linus took Minix and made linux (linus's minix). Minix was created and owned by Dr. Tanenbaum. He made minix as a teaching tool for students who wanted to learn unix. After linus made linux they got 'into it' a bit.
Something to keep in mind, linus was just a student when he made linux and it was because of school work he had to do that led him to making linux. I wonder what is in your head waiting to come out :) Good luck with your paper.

P.S. I just saw your link about interviews. I volunteer for GNU (nothing huge, basically maintaining mailing lists for them) . The point is, I may be able to get you some interviews with gnu 'bigshots' or whoever comes up in your research that is part of gnu and you would like to interview. Keep it in mind and pm me if you want me to try and set it up down the road.

Here's my own book (not yet complete), which has a summary of some history: http://www.cs.yorku.ca/~cs251010/aboutLinux.pdf

The GNU website is a good resource, and I love hearing Richard Stallman's speeches (many are on YouTube and Google Video).
