Interesting, I never knew what exactly BSD was, or how it compared to Linux.

However, based on what the author of that article says. Wouldn't Linux still technically be better since it allows you complete control over what goes into your OS?

Since Linux is built from ground up, starting with the kernel, if you know what you're doing, wouldn't you be able to literally build the ideal system you want? The way I see it is, you get stuck with whatever the BSD guys put into their base system...

I could see some advantages to having a "complete" system such as BSD, and I'll probably check it out at some later date. Ultimately though, I think Linux gives the most power to the user.

Whats considered part of the base system in BSD is very minimal. Basic things like a shell, BSD's version of top, vi etc. I suppose you COULD put together a linux system that had absolutley no utilities but it wouldn't be very useful obviously.

Its also possible to strip down both BSD and linux for embedded use. The main advantage (or disadvantage depending on your viewpoint) of BSD is its license. The ports system is also nice although you can find something equivlent in the linux world in gentoo's portage.

For the record ive found the linux version of quake 3 runs faster under freeBSD using the linux compat layer than in actual linux :)
