I've actually still got a system for robotics (P1 90MHz) that runs Warty, though it is a very very heavily modified warty with a lot of packages backported and otherwise made to work on the aged distribution...

It's a non-networked system with a very specific task and to invest 6 hours upgrading it to a newer distribution (and probably discover some of the custom in-house scripts need rewriting) is just not worth it.

Hoary was nice, I liked it. I actually quite preferred it to "breezy badger", which had weird glitches Hoary hadn't.
I was using it on a spare computer recently, simply because all I had on hand to get the computer working was an old shipit ubuntu hoary. And it worked just the same as Dapper would have, I bet. I only upgraded that machine to dapper because I needed the alsa-tools package to get the FM synth working.

I kept running Warty for quite a while after upgrading to Hoary in a virtual machine to help triage some bugs. Same with Hoary, but that was shorter. Also it's very common practice not to upgrade a server OS for years, hence the success of Debian, and the raison d'être of long time support releases.

To me there isn't much difference between Hoary and Dapper apart from a new default theme and newer versions of everything. There's probably something I'm missing.

I still have a little bit of Hoary, Breezy and dapper here myself. I guess Hoary would be used on a Pentium 1 to a AMD K6-2450 for a very light version of Ubuntu if I need one on a older computer. Mnd you. Xubuntu 6.06 LTS works just as nice on a AMD K6-2 system/

How about a working screensaver configuration?
All the screensavers work and you have free reign over their settigns.

Granted, I've moved on from Hoary as well, but every now and then I really miss the old working XAnalogTV and the ability to set screensaver preferences.

I've got a partition on one of my computers with Hoary still working. I booted into it not too long ago. It'll probably go to a fresh install of Edgy or FreeBSD pretty soon though. My main desktop has a totally sweet Dapper setup which is skipping at least Edgy.

Hah! In the old days we had no steenkin' network upgrades! One of my personal servers at work is still running RH5.1. It is off the network, so no problems there. It contains some very old python applications, which are probably not even supported anymore by current python versions, so that's why I never upgraded.

We made an incredible step forward within 2 years. It's like from Win 95 to XP, hardware is now much often recognized and working out of the box and the overall usability has heavily improved due to the improvements that all the parts of the ubuntu software has made.
