do you think we might see ray tracing used instead of rasterization in commercial applications in the near future? How long will it take? Maybe in the next generation consoles? At my university they're doing some really cool things with real time ray tracing, and the stuff you can do is really amazing, just look for example at www.irtc.org. There's still a lot of work to do though. And by the way do you think this is a field which may offer good job opportunities in the future?

I think it is a matter of time. I think as soon as the video cards REALLY handle ray tracing on real tiem, then there is going to be a huge step forwards on this area. There are a lot of investigation on my Univeristy also.

there are some great programs for that
like the great free Linux KPovModeler.
I am very hoping that some day this great program would be integrated into blender3d.
and with blender3d you know that there IS money you can make.

I also believe it's a matter of time but the tools are also going to change so the effort put into learning it today probably not worth it.
