Do you want good free, legal music that has 'some rights reserved'?

Have a look at www.jamendo.com (http://www.jamendo.com/en/). There is a lot of very good music there! I'm quite impressed by the quality and diversity of the music that is available.

Music can be downloaded in OGG and MP3 through Bittorrent or eMule.

From the site:

jamendo is a new model for artists to promote, publish, and be paid for their music.

On jamendo, the artists distribute their music under Creative Commons licenses. In a nutshell, they allow you to download, remix and share their music freely. It's a "Some rights reserved" agreement, perfectly suited for the new century.

These new rules make jamendo able to use the new powerful means of digital distribution like Peer-to-Peer networks such as BitTorrent or eMule to legally distribute albums at near-zero cost.

jamendo users can discover and share albums, but also review them or start a discussion on the forums. Albums are democratically rated based on the visitors’ reviews. If they fancy an artist they can support him by making a donation.

All there needs to be is one artist who distributes a song under a free licence to get a "hit". The playing of such a song on mainstream radio would bring to the forefront issues such as free distribution and collaborative licences, not to mention DRM.

urukrama: THANK YOU! I usually don't go to sites like this but I thought I would give this one a shot, and so for it's been very positive and it's nice to have the default download be OGG

I found one artist on there, but nobody is seeding his albums :(

Man I got insanely excited... but my college has all of it's ports filted so there's no incoming, thus no torrenting. If anyone knows some "not as good" free, legal, music sites that don't require torrenting, I'd be much obliged.

Jamendo can stream the music. Would that work? In that way you could check it out, and download what you like later on some other computer/connection.

forgive me for saying this, but another option is to listen to the stream with windows media player (ahem - on windows of course), you can "save as" in mp3...
