Symantec has been predicting for quite a while now that virus authors would increasingly dedicate their attention to the Mac platform and that Macs were becoming a tempting target for hackers. However, a newly discovered Mac OSX virus is hardly the firewall breach that the antivirus software makers have been prophesising........... The virus nevertheless infects other data in the folder in which it is started, regardless of extension. It appears not to possess an internal processing routine of its own. It may require the aid of the user to spread it by sending it out by mail or passing it via removable storage media.

how about that!!!](*,)

Wait a sec...so does this mean it is the users fault for the virus spreading?

There have already been several (around 10, I think) viruses on Mac OS X, and around 50 on Mac OS Classic. All of them have fizzled, often because they used security holes that were quickly patched. I expect this one will also be patched into oblivion after infecting a few dozen computers.

Basically, this is non-news.

EDIT: These numbers were pulled out of my hat. They are extremely approximate, and should not be considered an accurate reflection of reality.

Yes, but Windows viruses spread that way also.

I believe the reason that they say that it has between "0-49" infections is because that virus was created for testing purposes.

This is a 'proof of concept virus'. Not a real one ;)

I have seen many proof of concept viruses, even one that is cross platform that would infect Windows, OSX and linux.
