The second KDE 4 developers snapshot (http://kde.org/info/3.80.2.php) is now available. This 3.80.2 release includes source from all the KDE modules. Application developers are strongly advised to work primarily on KDE 4 from now on. This release builds with Qt 4.2.0 and 4.2.1 (but not the 4.2 preview). Packages are available for Kubuntu (http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde4-3.80.2.php) and currently working through the SUSE buildservice (http://software.opensuse.org/download/repositories/KDE:/KDE4/).---------kde.org

When is KDE 4 suppose to be released? I remember reading somewhere that KDE 4 will be in Kubuntu Fiesty, will it be out by then?

No, feisty probably won't come with it.

I think kde4 is set for the second half of 2007.

Anybody know of any good articles describing what KDE 4 will have?

Not really an article, but it is an overview ;-)

Still looks like KDE 3, most of the stuff that's been done is KDE-libs and kde-base, like phonon, decibel, solid...

Sorry for this question but what's happening with Gnome 3??? Is it at least in planning (or development, but I doubt it)

i heard that development for plasma has stalled (or it had done for a period of time in the recent past).
developers are now being asked to put everything into kde4 rather than kde 3.x

Hm, I have been looking into this too but couldn't find much on it though. Anyone else knows?

try this (http://live.gnome.org/ThreePointZero) or this (http://live.gnome.org/ProjectRidley). the latter is more about incorperating gnome parts into gtk ready for gnome 3.0.

I wouldn't expect gnome 3 for a few years. It's been my experience that gnome development moves rather slow. Sure there are releases every 6 months but the improvements are nothing groundbreaking. It's usually just small steps whereas KDE usually takes leaps, especially with QT4 now out and all its improvements. Only time will tell I suppose.

I don't think that's true at all. Please post references to the statements you make.

There are some really interesting ideas on that first page. I have been looking forward to a feature as this:

Merging taskbar, launcher and notification bar : An intersteing point is the dock : the dock merge launchbar and taskbar (with the tiny arrow). When i launch etheir gajim, gaim or liferea, i have at least three time an representation of this app : a launcher (an entry in the menu, an icon in the panel or the desktop), an icon in the notification area and at least one button in the taskbar. This should be very simple and clean to merge all this apparition of the same apps in One representation. the dock from OSX is near this vision but, we still need Exposé to switch between app. Consider a dock with big icons. Each icon is a launcher. If the app is launched, clicking ot the icon just focus on the runing window of the app. This icons have emblem which notify user like in the notification area. If the user drop the mail icon but receive a mail, the mail icon pop in the dock like in the notification area. This imply an application runing in the background and then a lower startup (see update-notifier, etc).

I don't think the gnome devs want to be left out when KDE4 would be released late next year... so who knows they might try to get it done around the same time.

There's actually a small grain of truth to this - aseigo admits that he hasn't had as much time to devote to it during the last few months due to having to organise Akademy '06, etc. Still, this is an OK kind of stall, as it's not due to any kind of directionlessness or malaise as was the case with, say, Tenor.

Although Tenor itself (thought to be dead for some time) will likely be reborn as Strigi+NEPOMUX, two pieces of technology which, gods be praised, seem to be desktop-neutral and require no awkward dependencies. I'm a big fan of desktop-neutral approaches like these as they can easily be adopted by both GNOME and KDE alike with no needless re-invention of the wheel (except, of course, for front-ends, but this is trivial).

Edit:
