Imagine this:

KFC or Coca Cola release their secret recipe to the public under an open source license. They encourage people to modify the recipe for the better - decrease calories and synthetic chemicals, but keep the same taste.

The world improves the recipe to a point where it is safe, healthy, low in calories and almost free to produce. KFC/Coca Cola starts producing the "perfected" recipe in mass quantities, improving PR and health/regulatory standings, and making even more money :)

While I know KFC & Coke would never do such a thing in a millions years, would something like this work in the food industry?

Can their taste compete with the commercial products?

Compared to what? the only thing that makes the inferour shop products attractive is because we have no skill in producing anything better.

Open Cola is much more tasty than CokaCola because you get to modify the recipy as you go.

Did you know that published recipies are one of things that have always been held in a copy left mentality? copy a recipy, change it, give it to someone else... no part of that is copyright infringement. interesting really.

Thanks for the wikis, here's one you may not know: Cube Cola (http://sparror.cubecinema.com/cube/cola/new_recipe.html)

This can compete with Coke - tastes just like it :)

Yep :) It's made & sold by the two owners of the Cube Microplex, an "alternative" cinema in central Bristol. They don't like Coke's environmental and business practices, so they refuse to serve coke, but Pepsi and Virgin Cola weren't good enough for their customers, so they came up with the recipe themselves :)
