there have been a couple of threads that have discussed on whether or not we should get rid of the brown color in ubuntu. well, i got a different approach, instead of getting rid of the brown, get rid of those annoying people on the cover and on the front page of ubuntu.com. ](*,)

i know its supposed to be linux for human beings and all, but those people just irritate the heck outta me, even if i only see them a couple of months when i visit the website. i think we should rather just design a mascot or something, cos those people are jsut way too cheesy. and as always, this is all just my opinion. whats your opinion?

i find your anger funny :D

(o ye, and i'm one of those people who think ubuntu should keep it's signature earthy look :D)

well, i dont have a problem with the earthy brown look, just the people ;)

theres no anger here, just bothered. i mean look at these people. doesnt exactly give the right impression in my opinion. nothing wrong with human, nothing wrong with natural, but when its sooo darn gei, to be honest it was almost a good enough reason for me to not use ubuntu :???:

It actually makes Ubuntu stick out from the crowd as somewhat more 'professional' than other distros. Letting newbies know that they are not leaving reality into a world of geeky-hackers could earn Ubuntu quite a few more downloads (IMHO :) )

Welcome to the happy, smiley Ubuntu club, Circus-Killer ;)

I quite like the blue, but it has been done to death by everyone! And I am not a huge fan of the minimalistic Apple boxes. I'm not overjoyed at the brown Ubuntu interface, and IMHO the logo is a tad forgettable (it took me ages to work out the logo were people holding hands!). But the people thing is neat, reminds me of Benetton adds.

i agree. either put some fat, ugly people in there, or nobody. everyone knows the people they have now are models who all own macs.

I didn't know we had a theme song? :)

Anywhy, I think the people are cool! It's better than a Yellow dog or an Integral sign and an Infinity sign supper imposed(Fedora) or a Blue mountain circle thing(Mepis). The HUMANS are human and Ubuntu is for Humans so newbies I believe will be attracted to it. If you see all these weird names and mascots and one of them actually have people smileing at you, then damn, I'll click it.

](*,) I'd rather look at pretty people.

If I want to see fat ugly people I'll just go out and venture forth in the real world. I want my computer and TV screens to be totally fictitious and idealistic. Pretty people FTW.

The people are cool and different. Maybe they should be doing something other than lying down and holding hands. But whatever. At least we don't look like another wanna be Windows or Mac OSX box. Solid coloured boxes with funky abstract logos are soooo overrated. 8)

For me, these people look a bit too healthy and happy and successfull, and somehow reminds me of advertisement for margarine.

If I could chose, I would rather have drawn people than photographs, for example http://tn3-2.deviantart.com/fs8/300W/i/2005/283/a/f/Linux_tan_fanart__Ubuntu_by_juzo_kun.jpg

WHAHAHAHA... Alright, there's no better way to convince people than like you did. Sorry to be rude to those who like the people but i was laughing for three minutes when I saw the above, it makes the people really look lame indeed.

But then again ubuntu is doing quite well on artwork compared to others, i like the default edgy look, its quite professional looking.

@ kalle
agreed :)

I love the OS-tan concepts. There's another one in the Gallery that I have on my desktop right now.

Personally, I'd rather stabilise the OS and make it look nicer than concentrate on the web page.

Ubuntu's message is all about people ... hence people should be the focus. Now, whether they are coloured or white, etc, is another story. I am against looking all generic.

I had never heard of OS-tans before, but I really like the idea. That drawing is great :)

Wait, those are earthy-brown people.

Personally, I don't like either the dung-brownness of Ubuntu nor the sappy "human beings," but it might be OK if they were naked.

Hey, it's an idea! :-k

Just tryin' to help here...

I can't say that I love nor hate the people. the brown theme I like. It's not even brown exactly anymore is it? I like it as a default. I did vote agaist the people but I don't really care too much. To be perfectly, honest, the public is so used to advertising that they tune it out, it doesn't really matter. I think the regular logo would fit nicely instead of any people, but that's just my opinion. The logo , now that's something unique and interesting. And that represents 3 people holding hands too, doesn't it?

Ubuntu looks like a social foundation. Not like an professional operating system. At least the web page gives me that perception.

chaosgeisterchen

No, this would be going too far. But we have to change the approach a little bit to show that we are a professional operating system which is not only keen on humanity but also on performance, stability and other superiorities.

If apple has the "X", then we can have a big brown "U" . I'm always taking a u-turn right back when I try out another distro.

Many advertising firms have done polls about this. Brown is the color least liked by consumers. When I see the default Ubuntu theme, it makes me think it's a UPS sponsored OS. Weird, but true.

Question:

If you were a hardware manufacturer and visited the Ubuntu-homepage - what would you think? Would you offer them extened hardware support (just decide by first impression)?

steven8
November 1st, 2006, 12:25 PM
You can't think this looks better than the Ubuntu Page:

http://fedora.redhat.com/

I like the look of the Ubuntu page. I do not think it is the reason hardware manufacturers don't develop for Ubuntu. they don't develop for Linux.

@spinflick - as a child of the seventies, myself, what makes you want to puke about the old Coke commercial. There is nothing wrong with wishing for world unity. We need a little more of that. Which is a lot of what attracts me to Ubuntu. it's philosophy of community.
