Hey all,
I am looking to buy a laptop from HP and have configured two:

Laptop 1
AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-56(1.8GHz/512KB)
17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone + Webcam
2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024MB)
FREE Upgrade to 100 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive!!
FREE Upgrade - LightScribe DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
802.11a/b/g WLAN & Bluetooth
High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

Laptop 2
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo processor T5600 (1.83 GHz)
17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
HP IMPRINT Finish + Microphone + Webcam
2.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024MB)
FREE Upgrade to 100 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive!!
FREE Upgrade - LightScribe DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth

All other components equal the Intel based puter is 20 bucks more

Is there any reason to pick the Intel over the AMD, the 20 doesnt bother me but I would like to know if one is better (quality wise) than the other.

Does one of the processors have any support issues with ubuntu? I plan to run ubuntu 6.06 or 6.10 exclusively on it.

Also, the website will give me a free upgrade to a 100Gb sata HDD but to get a 200Gb Dual HDD setup it costs 200USD more. Could I take the free 100Gb drive and install another one that I buy from newegg to get the same result? (I saw them on new egg for 100USD)

Obviously if there is an option for dual HDD setup that means there are two slots/areas for installation right?

As you can see I know nothing about laptops especially what I can add to them and what I cant.

Thanks in advance for the help, and please tell me if anyone sees anything that may not be supported by ubuntu...

Since I plan to never use windows again I want to make sure that I buy the right laptop for ubuntu, seeing as I only have one shot at getting it right.

That's alright. Took only two clicks... Hopefully, somebody in here will give you some opinions about those two laptops!

Good luck.

I know nothing about laptops, but as far as desktops go, the Core 2 Duo is eating the AMD X2. I'd go with the Intel.

I'd go with the Core 2 Duo since it's a superior architecture (although everything before it, sucked compared to AMD).
Also, get a 7200rpm drive instead of a 5400rpm one. Big difference.

Cool, and you have heard of no problems using intel's chip with ubuntu? Or is a chip a chip in ubuntu's eyes?

cool I could spring for the 7200 Rpm, will I still be able to add another like drive later? Are there 2 bays on the laptop if the advertisement says that I can have dual drives or is that some kinda logical thing?

Here is a review from TOMSHARDWARE site. It comes down in favour of the intel option:

There is only one answer to your question... Core 2 Duo! :)

Yeah, I perused the toms hardware linked supplied above and they seem pretty adamant with picking the Intel chip, so thats what im going for.

btw, thanks nickle for the link

Get the Intel chipset and bump the HD to 7200rpm.

What laptop is it ?

I've always been an AMD fan but never for laptops, lately i will even say get intel for the desktop.

You won't have any problems with it.

Right now, the only answer is Intel.

yes between intel core 2 duo and amd x2's go with a core 2 duo, but if you wanna go low budget pc, then, go amd sempron.

I like AMD more, but Intel Core 2 Duo is better...

No. Get Core Quadro!

Dunno when it's out though; and when it is Core 2 Duo will suddenly become lots cheaper.

Intel all the way.

Go for the Core2Duo, it's way superior.

Intel is not a matter superiority, its a matter of support as most hardware and software doesnt take AMD.

What do you mean? In terms of mere power Intel is clearly leading at the moment. The Turions cannot cope with the Centrino Duos, although they are 64-bit-powered. There should have been more efforts to push Linux into the direction of being the first operating system really taking advantage out of the new technology.

umm AMDs can run everything intel cpus can.....need I remind you intels 64 bit extensions are the same as AMDs.

The performance difference is not that great if you look at the benchmarks. The battery life difference is rather large, which would push my vote to Intel.

Personally, I own two computers both with AMD processors, so you can see where my loyalties lie. I have not had any support problems, and do believe that AMD is very well supported; mind you I also speak from personal experience. Also worthy of note, I do run 64 bit ubuntu on my laptop, and 32 bit on my desktop, so I get flavors of both.

I'd go with the Core 2 Duo. I'm not a Intel/AMD fan i'm a best performance/buck fan.
