View Full Version : Keeping desktop environments seperate?

I tried Xubuntu, and I quite liked its speed, but I removed it ( via a big and painful script (my poor Y key!)) because I did not like how all the Xcfe config utilities were showing up alongside Gnome config utilities.

Having duplicate applications in the same menu is really messy, and it's even worse with Ubuntu and Kubuntu running alongside each other. (K this, K that... I must say it looks absurd).

Has there been any work towards separating desktop environments, so that when I run Xubunu any unnecessary config applications from Gnome are hidden, and vice-versa? (Or to install Xubuntu but not install more mail clients, etc?).

Thanks!

when you are in gnome, delete all non-gnome apps from the menu. when you in kde, delete all non-kde apps from the menu. the menu entries are kept seperate in their respective kde and gnome directories in your home directory (ie .gnome2 and .kde)

I personally prefer the fact they pop up like that. It's easier to remove them if you don't want them than it is to put them there if you do want them. I have my Xfce apps on the GNOME menu and the other way, and it doesn't bother me at all.
