Hi, I just joined the forum. And as you might guess, I have a bunch of questions about Ubuntu.

I heard about Ubuntu from the Gentoo forums. I've tried installing Gentoo once... failed, miserably, ended up taking out my previous NTFS partition  . I'm trying it a second time, but as you might imagine, it's rather difficult and time consuming (and given that it's almost the end of the semester and I don't have enough of the latter.)

I already worked with Fedora Core 2 for some time and Suse 9.0 (have been messing around with this one for quite some time actually.) Both of them are nice, but when it comes to software installation (something off of the net), things haven't been so easy.

Now the questions :) ...
When it comes to Ubuntu, how is it with the installation (sorry, couldn't find a manual of some sort) compared to Gentoo, FC2 and Suse 9.0?

When it comes to installing software on the OS, is there something that will manage things for me (I'm thinking of Portage for Gentoo... again)?

FYI: The "Increase Size" and "Decrease Size" features in the posts don't work, I just tried it...

Also, does Ubuntu come only with Gnome, or can I install KDE or even Enlightenment?

ubuntu is gnome based
kubuntu is the bastard child of ubuntu and kde
both are good but ehh your better off to stick with one or the other
yes for enlightenment

umm why do you need a manual for the install. trust me its nothing like fedoras or gentoo but you will be able to figure it out on your own. software installs are done via synaptic or apt-get or if you want you can still compile from source. after installing ubuntu we do have a guide

happy ubuntuing

installation for me personally was very easy. It is a very automatic installation. I don't know enough about gentoo to compare them. Secondly, there is a package program called apt-get. It has a GUI component called synaptic. Also very easy to use.

You can install anything you like. Ubuntu uses GNOME by default, but if you want Enlightenment, just apt-get it; set up your /etc/apt/sources.list and you can install anything that has a Debian package.

Yes, installation is a breeze... you won't need a manual. It's easier than Windows IMO, but the interface isn't as pretty. Don't let that scare you.

Hey Stormy, what's up :) ?

Haven't seen you since the gentoo forums (I'm ats007spdou there  .)

What's apt-get?

TravisNewman
April 18th, 2005, 09:42 PM
The package manager. You can think of it like this: apt-get is to Ubuntu what emerge is to Gentoo. Though, they do work in different ways, they provide the same function-- downloading and installing software.

I'll look around the site for some info later on...

Does the Install CD come with all the normal goodies that one would expect (gdb, gcc/g++, mozilla, etc)? Is there a complete list of these things?

TravisNewman
April 18th, 2005, 09:51 PM
it comes with a lot of things that aren't installed, but are on the cd. Mozilla Firefox comes installed, and mozilla thunderbird is just an apt-get away, and it IS included on the cd. Development tools like g++: some are included on the cd, but you'll have to apt-get install build-essential to get them. Most people don't need them out of the box so they arn't included.

honestly dude just install ubuntu and get it over with, install takes like 30 mins, and all your questions will be answered and you will have a fully functional linux system

Theres a few things that are not on the install cd that you'll probably want such as various compilers etc, in the howto's you'll find an unofficial guide that will tell you how to get everything you need and someone wrote a script to do it all as well- just poke around the how to section.
As far as install goes, I too completely and miserably failed at installing gentoo and it was about a year until i tried linux again when ubuntu was released last fall, was like night and day- Someone who doesn't know a thing about linux could install ubuntu (I know cause that was me 6 months ago :) )

gentoo is great, but I hadn't enough patience. I don't notice much speed difference between Ubuntu and Gentoo, so as far as I'm concerned there's no real benefit to using Gentoo-- for me anyway. For others it's great, as long as you have the patience, and you'll come out of it with a lot of new knowledge.

Nice screenshot. I need to figure out how to trick out my screenshot that way :) .

I would try it just for that knowledge part. I loove to learn. There is always something to be done on my boxes and I have to time to compile [heck, my only chance of installing gentoo would be if my whole family goes on vacation!]. Again, after reading in an article on OSNews that on a 2ghz celeron proc abiword took 34minutes to compile, I think I'd summon all the TMNT 4 War Lords and unleash them @ my computer...

otaku = anime fan (to westerners)

to japanese:
Usually an otaku person has nothing better to do with their life so they pass the time by watching anime, playing videogames, surfing the internet (otaku is also used to refer to a nerd/hacker/programmer) ... kind of negative...

Of course, if you take the real definition, it's very very negative. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otaku

But it seems "sweetened out" in the west, so it's more of a status. That's the same as geek, in fact: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geek but that one is sweetening with time as you know it ;)

Anyone watched "Otaku no Video"? If not, find this 2 part OAV by gainax about Otaking and his friends taking over the world! http://www.gainax.co.jp/anime/otaku-e.html (yeah, this is 20 years old..)

we don't have much anime on tv here. Only kids-friendly stuff like pokemon.

I always downloaded naruto using animesuki. The dutch cartoon network channel doesn't air naruto. So I continue downloading naruto.

If you liked Akira get SteamBoy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0348121/combined), its the last masterpiece from the guy that made Akira --it has some abnormal 3d effects < even better than Blood's (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0275230/)(first ever full 3d anime).

Does anyone know the name of that that anime that was produced by one man on his mac with his wife? It's about a friendship between a boy and a girl millions of miles away from one another, she's in outer-space fighting aliens and he is on earth, sorry I can't get any more descriptive.
