At the moment I still stick to Crimson Editor for windows, is there anything comparable for Linux that you would judge as as good or better?

Give me some options. :-)

At my work, we are using phped (http://www.nusphere.com). Its not free, but it has a linux trail version :)

i really dig on gedit. syntax highlighting is pretty nifty.

It's not free, but we really like Komodo (from Active State) in my office. Great for X/HTML, PHP, Perl and more.
