Year written? Year recorded? By composer? By ensemble/conductor? Is there some sort of standard here? There should be...

I usually do title/ composer/ genre (for instance: baroque/ contemporary/ wienerclassicism; if it's necessary. Obviously I don't tag a Mozart piece this way).

i'd do it by composer and opus number (koechel number, in mozart's case).

I put like this:

title:
work (with opus number or other catalogue, if available) - movement
eg: String Quartet No. 8 in B flat major, D. 112, op 168 - Allegro ma non troppo

artist:
Composer's name
eg: Schubert

Album:
Record name (or recording location)
eg: String Quartets, Vol 4

Genre:
Classical (as broad as possible)

Comment:
Recording performers and location (if available).
eg: Quarteto Italiano

I fill the rest of the tags if I have access to the information, like Year, Disc Number, and so on.

I generally go Composer - Opus/koechel number - work title - movement title.

Listening to classical music doesn't automatically make somebody an audiophile or vice versa.

I know EasyTag lets you choose a "composer" tag. Maybe you should use that.
