Hey, I am pretty new to Ubuntu and gotta say I love it :P but how come loads of people are trying to get nvidia drivers working? Is it for gaming reasons or does Ubuntu not display properly with some cards without newer drivers?

Was just curious as I have seen quite a lot of talk about it.

The nvidia drivers that come with Ubuntu do not have 3D acceleration which is needed by games and Compiz (Beryl).

To enable 3D acceleration you have to install the official Nvidia drivers.

It's actually very easy to install the nvidia drivers, I'm not sure why people have a problem with it.

I haven't tried yet, I dont want to muck everything up while it is running so smoothly, I dont intend on using Ubuntu for gaming any-hoo, so it's all good :)

I've not had any problems installing the nVidia Beta drivers, however, it could be a pain in the *** for some (depending on the method you use, you may have to run the installer every time you reboot).

Some cards don't work right w/o the official drivers. My tablet for instance gets weird artifacts runing with stock community drivers.
