I voted in both!

Anyways, I use CREAM (http://cream.sourceforge.net/). It's basically a GUI wrapper for Vi, which is sweet. Plus, the name reminds me of a Wu-Tang song, which is even sweeter:
"Cash Rules Everything Around Me, C.R.E.A.M. get the money, dolla dolla bills y'all!"

Gedit for GUI... other text-related programs I really like are Tomboy and SPE (Stani's Python Editor).

Nano for text-only.

Emacs for terminal and GUI because IMO it is easy to learn and is great for writing C programs.

nano is kind of confusing so is vi, and emacs

mcedit is just like using a notepad, no confusing commands are crap, it works just like a gui tool

Gedit for the gui, vi for the other terminals.

take sometime to learn vi, it's really worth it and you edit files/code twice as fast

jISh
October 4th, 2006, 01:39 AM
I voted for vi, but I use it's ncurses forum of nano more often.

jsmidt
October 4th, 2006, 02:10 AM
It is really worth every bodies time to learn at least the basics of vi. By the posix standard it will be on every linux/unix/*nix machine, whereas emacs/gedit/kate/etc... may not. Also you never know when you will be forced to use a terminal, so it is good to at least be somewhat familiar with vi since you can use it even if X doesn't work on a particular machine.

For "serious" jobs (well, it doesnt go more serious than a 100lines program on python, but whatever) , I use Emacs. Which I love.

For plain text configuration editing, I use the simple and fast nano.

I dont use GUI text editors. They are boring.

nano is one of my favorite things to use. i also like its logo, which makes it an easy favorite.

The only things I dont like about nano, is that C-k doesnt delete the text following the cursor, and it just deletes the whole line (afaik), and that it doesnt have an option to show the lines (afaik again).

Gedit because it is there and I'm a longtime Win user. I've used Nano and its great and all, but I just prefer Gedit.

It depends:
Small files fast - vi
Bigger files - gedit

I find joe is the best text editor.

sudo apt-get install joe

Just type joe <file>. It is then very simple to edit your file, press Ctrl + K + X to save. Done.

leafpad is good, too. it's like mousepad with less xfce clutter.

On the GUI I use Kate at home and GEdit at work. On the console, it's Nano if it's on the system, but I did learn Vi, and I use it occasionally when the mood sets in :P

It looks like I'm in the minority here. I love Emacs. The commands are second-nature to me. I can live inside Emacs and do everything right from it. I am starting to like Gedit when working in the GUI, though I wish it used Emacs cursor movement keys, which I always hit instinctively.

nano when using the command line, gedit if i'm using a gui

Yes, very simple. I can see now how complex :wq, or C-O are. Why don't all text editors use key commands that have nothing obvious to do with what you're doing? I mean, who doesn't spell "save" with a K and an X?

don't see any problem with gedit, so i'll continue to go with that ;)

I might buy an old laptop and put fluxbox on it. what graphical text editors are good for that? i don't want vim or any console editor.

edit: hopefully it has tabs

I use GNOME but I prefer XFCE's Mousepad. It's much faster than Gedit and has almost the same options.
In CLI I prefer nano.
