What is the 'dockbar' - like thinggus at the bottom? is it Edgy-specific, or can you maybe post a link as to how we could use it on Dapper? Looks great!

Here's what I've got going.

Dual monitor setup, two 19" CRTs at 1280x1024 each. The 'right' side is directly in front of me, so its my main panel. The 'left' is, well, off to the left. Put other stuff over there. I've thought about doing gdesklets or something on the left side, but so far have been happy just with the system monitor on the top bar. That, and running top. It helps to see when Opera has finally grabbed too much memory and needs to be closed/reopened.

And yeah, the background is tiled across both. Haven't found any doublewide images that I like as much as this one. Besides, I've come to like the default colors, and that background works so well with the orange/brown setup.

Hi, you have to remove your gstreamer plugin & install the mplayer one. To rip directly to .mp3 you'll need to set up a new profile, see this link:

Compositing allows multiple images to be displayed on top of each other. For all practical reasons, it gives you window transparency and shadows.

XFCE has a good compositor, KDE has a compositor as well (although I hear plenty of people have problems with it). GNOME 2.16 is finally catching up with the pack and has an extremely limited compositor.

Why use a wallpaper at all? Make the background solid color. Sometimes I make it a two-color background, with smooth transition between colors. THat should be minimal enough and it looks quite good.

have you tried changing the colors to a pre-existing kde color scheme yet? you can do so in the 'colors' section of the system settings. it's a lot easier than trying to mess with the colors of a gtk theme, as it's part of the control options rather than opening up a theme file.

Yes I converted everything but as I wrote it is Work In Progress and is going to be released as soon as I fix the remaining bugs in the GTK theme.

The only part I can't release are the icons, I already got permission for the GTK and Emerald.

I've tried that. I saw your impressive blackish (http://ubuntuforums.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=2774&cat=3) shot in the gallery yesterday & it prompted me to play with the colours.

It's just the actual theme engines don't seem to work with the desired colours. I'm looking for a modern, non-plastiK/Kermaik theme that's smooth, flowing & consistent. The Linspire clear theme is the best that I've found so far, but it's far too bright (I can't change its colours either) & it's a bit of an osx rip-off. If I could find a way of editing it I would be happy, as I like its feel, but not its appearance - does that make sense? :-k

Mind telling us whom to lobby for permission? I gather it is originally an OS X theme, which was subsequently ported to Windows, meaning permission must have (I surmise) been given once before. Don't see why it wouldn't be given for Gnome, also.

Mind telling us whom to lobby for permission? I gather it is originally an OS X theme, which was subsequently ported to Windows, meaning permission must have (I surmise) been given once before. Don't see why it wouldn't be given for Gnome, also.

I already have permission for the GTK and beryl theme but I don't for the Icons.

Everything was done by David Lanham but the icons are available on the iconfatory only and not on David's site like the OSX theme.

Do you require permission to release the icon.theme file? I've already got the .png icons, but I have to set all my icons manually. :(

I'm so pleased with my desktop! I've only had Ubuntu for about a month and this is the first time I've tried anything with theming. I decided to go with a dark theme for the time being, but I plan on doing a light/theme next month. I love how customizable everything is!

The icon .theme file alone is useless, you have to rename the icons to the proper name. This file only contains some general info like the size of the icons, if the icons are scalable, etc. but not this .png goes to Firefox and this to GIMP.

Once again my desktop is rather simple compared to everyone else. However, I like simple. If I can figure out how to install compiz now that it seems to have changed and none of the how-tos work I will. But until then, here is my plain and simple desktop. The art work was created by an ubuntu user. I hope he doesn't mind me linking it.

The new black pixmap theme is almost finished. I still have to do the other 6 colors, panel etc... but that shouldn't take very long. I may make another window border, other than Noir (http://gnomethemes.org/?p=71), to go with it, depending on time and inspiration.

Onux (http://gnomethemes.org/pre/screenshots/Onux.png) (onyx><linux)

I don't remember who showed this noir theme to me last month but I installed it an am using part of it. I like the window borders but the full theme makes scroll bars really hard to see and the text when typing in some search boxes is almost invisible.

I'd like to use it but it's just a bit too dark. Does anyone know of a black theme like this but with a bit less black? Does that make sense?

It's actually pretty much all default stuff from Gnome 2.16.

I'm using the *new* Gnome icon theme with Clearlooks for the GTK theme/borders. This stuff is only available on Edgy; Dapper will still have the ugly non-colorful theme and icons. I tried backporting the icons, but the naming-specs have changed so not all the icons will show up. Edgy is pretty stable from my experience (fresh install, haven't tried an upgrade), so I'd give you the thumbs up to switching.

I modified the Gossip icon theme, send me a PM with your email and I can send you that if you want.

Wallpaper is a simple vertical gradient (#507AA0 #2D4C69).. :D

If you are referring to gdk>gtk=xul apps, apps that force a white base[NORMAL] color, web browsers, or bright wallpapers, you have to remember it is truely a dark theme and should be used as one. Other than that, what version of gtk are you using?

There's many themes that are dark gray but are not dark. Just go to gnome-look.org and see the recent surge of themes that claim 'dark'. I could make the scrollbars alien and ugly and brighten them but that would botch the theme. If you use these poorly coded apps that should be boycotted, bright wallpapers, or spend a lot of time on the internet, maybe dark themes are not for you.

You could also lighten it up yourself very easily.

I have to admit I haven't really figured out the gtk stuff yet. I have a default Ubuntu install but I installed the orange-look gtk from this (http://www.taimila.com/orange-look.php) site. I don't know if that also changed the underlying gtk. The problems I alluded to were with Firefox and searching the Ubuntu forums.

There's many themes that are dark gray but are not dark. Just go to gnome-look.org and see the recent surge of themes that claim 'dark'. It's a very attractive theme and I like the orange highlights. I wouldn't want it botched up. I didn't realize that some apps override the theme settings. I also doubt I could differentiate a poorly coded app from a well coded one. I tend to work in a darker environment so darker themes are easier on the eyes. I have to turn my monitor down as it is to avoid being blinded.

You could also lighten it up yourself very easily.
Very true. I've been meaning to learn how to make my own themes or modify others but so far that is not a skill I possess. I guess it's time to invest some time. However, in this case, changing the theme will probably not address the problem if it's more a function of the app not playing nice.

Thanks for the feedback.

I'm going through a brushed metal phase, and the apple on the desktop is just because I like the logo, and because I use the apple windowbar buttons.

It's also part of a Xinerama setup, but the screenshot tool doesn't like taking clips of the second monitor.... Basically, it's the same, but without the apple logo on the wallpaper, just the brushed metal with the curve through the middle - oh, and a nice subtle little Conky display top right of the second monitor

im liking the theme bvc. It does not look all that bad in firefox either.
Good to hear, and thanks for saying so. There's usually not much feedback on black themes. I use epiphany and can stand it. Certainly not near as easy as a bright theme but that goes with the dark theme territory. Enjoy!

Oops. I stand corrected. I've been playing around with both. Now it's Onux-green. I like this one better. It's seems a bit more refined with the borders around the window titles on the pannel and some other nice touches. For clarity, the window border is one of the included emerald themes. I also included one on the edge of the cube since I just figured out how to do it.

In keeping with the dark theme, I also chose this (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=46652&PHPSESSID=e7be232acd409eaf948c403260116b09) for my gdm theme. It was the closest I could find. Bvc, have you done any gdm themes?
