Is there a program I can use to create a movie out of segments of mpg video? or something similar?

i am not sure if the original poster of this thread was interested in some sort of app that one could make a video from pictures (still images like jpg or png) but i certainly am!!

i have tried most of the video editors but they don't seem to support dropping pictures into the timeline.

what app is good for doing stop-motion?

blender has a good sequnance editior, tho you will want the latist SVN. there have been massive changes since the last stable. I have used it to make a short claymation and outher things. it also features a node compositor for more advanced effects.

if you want to make a video from a set of images, i think mplayer can do that

I would also recommend blender, but for audio sequencing, well, I've never got audio to play (it will record though).

there's a bug with blender audio playback on ubuntu, there are some solutions here http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=118497&highlight=sound+ubuntu the only perminalt solution seems to be compile it
