I was taking a quick glance at Doctor Dobbs Journal here online and ran into this on the web site. Thought it was kind of interesting read. http://www.ddj.com/dept/embedded/193006055 Imagine having a quad processor running at your home computer on a single chip. I remeber always hearing about SMP computers from Penitum 1`s on up over the years.

The engineering sample's test results were on the net few months ago even for the server versions. That means two quad core cpu hmm I remember my first smp rig was 2 100Mhz now they have 2 quad core each at 2.4Ghz or 2.6.
Actually saw both on Yahoo auctions this summer.

Bring it on !

I would love to have a SUN Niagra based box though.

I never had a dual processor machine throughout my career or at home to use on a regular basis. Always had a single processor machine here. Would love to have a dual or quad processors. I could also imagine 2-4 of those quad processors in a machine for home use. I would be drooling like crazy.

Heh, honestly, what's the use of taking a look at things that will be out after 2010? Will you have a pc in 2010? I don't know! :) I mean... yes they look cool... but I rather think of closer events.. for example of the fact that I may have to change my pc early next year... and that a quad core intel is likely, unless amd puts out something good :) (of course... depends on how much they will cost..)

Yeah, but this is from the same company that promised us that NetBurst would scale up to 10Ghz but ended up having to give up at 3.8Ghz when the limits of current technology wouldn't let them go any higher. I'll believe 80 cores when I see it.

Yeah that is the math coprocessor there. I can understand if your doing intensive calulations scientifically or financial where your into hefty number cruinching. Or even into doing polugon animation where you need the precision. But for the average end user like use or newbies. Still kewel there.

80 cores wow! i could have got last years project done so much quicker if i had one of those babies! 3 days of processor usage so high you can't even get the desktop to refresh at more than 0.01Hz

You can have 8cores/32threads now if you want, http://www.sun.com/processors/UltraSPARC-T1/index.xml

Unfortunately the T1's performance in itself isn't that ipressive.

I'll take your word for it as I've never seen one let alone used one.

I would agree with MIPS on this one. I have not used one iether. THe only two machines that I have used personally from Sun was the Ultra 5 and Ultra 10s from Sun. And of course my two sparcstation 1+ that I had. But couldn't find the connection for either of them to hook up to the monitors. THe sparc stations from sun are nice as well. A tad expensive but worth it for the average joe. Especially the newer machines the Utlra I think I could get them a complete system for about $50 last I checked. (And that is without the monitor eithe. Before someone flies off in the wrong direction. ) Just the operating system is not there.
