Just wondering if anyone recommends a PCI or USB wireless adaptor that works well with linux. i want to support some manufacturer that goes out of their way to provide a driver for linux. Preferably looking for one that says linux supported on the box somewhere

It not so much the card as the chipset used.

The problem is the chipsets can change with different revisions of the card.

So you need the exact model & version.

So i guess any Ralink chipset will be the best option?

Ralink would be a good choice. There are also others, have a look at the link I posted above, dunno how up to date it is.

I have a ralink rt2561 which is supposed to work with the rt2x00 drivers. I had to compile them myself but i couldnt get them to work, eventually i got it working through ndiswrapper. Just my experience with ralink, oh and by the way, their site is not very informational.
