Is there a free alternative to VMWare?

Depends on your interpretation of "free". If you mean free as in open-source then you'll want to look at Qemu. If you mean free as in "free beer" but not open-source then VMware fits this.

And only the VMWare Player or VMWare Server are free, actually. Workstation is a (very good) commercial product. It's one of those things I wouldn't mind paying for, actually, at least while I can't use QuarkXpress and Adobe Acrobat 7 Pro on Linux ;)

Even so, there's no need, as Workstation has a 30 day trial and I pre-made a few images to use later on (there are workarounds though, but this is more practical for me).

I run Tiny XP (Rev.05) on VMWare Player under Ubuntu, and it's the best XPerience I've had with any flavour of Windows whatsoever.

Ok, got it (vaguely) working. But it shows an error message and says that i need the vmmon kernel module because it can't find /dev/vmmon. How do I get it?
