These Russian dudes have done a phenomenal job on making their distro look and feel exactly like Windows XP. Now why you would want to do that in the first place...

I've been watching this distro for awhile, why they choose to use gnome over kde is a mystery.....

Not a bad job. Reasonably priced $50. Their gonna get in trouble for the name though. Its based off of Fedora Core 3. Kinda Old. Their 2007 version will be off of FC6.

Why would people want that? Because it looks similar to the OS they used to use. IMHO, it's a good thing, it lessens the shock. I am accustomed to searching menus and entering commands in the terminal to run programs, and generally exploring. So when I meet a different interface, I remain unfazed. Others get crazy when you change the position of an icon on their desktop.

EDIT : why they use Gnome : http://www.linux-xp.com/faq/2108.php

EDIT : why don't use KDE : http://www.linux-xp.com/faq/1987.php
I don't agree with them...they say that KDE is for hackers only...still...everyone has his/her own tastes...but what is good for Linus must be good for ordinary mortals!

Well..I agree with you there...seems like another Lindows debacle...only this time it is linux-xp...is XP a microsoft trademark? Athlon CPUs are named XPs..

Still, for the microsoft giant to take any notice, this must increase in popularity.

I installed this Linux-XP thing. Oddly, they use GNOME, but it's so Windows-ized you wouldn't know - and the 'control panel' uses the KDE control center... very strange.

The website and distro itself are full of terrible spelling mistakes. They should really get someone to clean it up.

Otherwise, it's a strange little project, that is sure to get sued by Microsoft if it goes anywhere.

They're russian...their english is better than my russian, hehe... still, for a commercial effort, they should clean up. However, about the suing, as they said, XP is not a trademark. The most MS can say is that consumers will percieve it as a port of Xp to Linux....but I think a judge would throw them out of court...or they would settle out of court.

Yes, I agree about the trademark. But the entire user interface is a copy of Windows (98 or so). I don't know enough about the law to tell, but it seems risky to me.

I don't see what's so odd about it. This whole "KDE is more Windows-like" idea is just a myth based on the fact that Gnome starts out with two panels. Gnome's Windows themes look much more authentic than KDE's themes. Both are customizable enough that it really doesn't matter what the defaults are.

Bleh. I'm using Linux to get away from the look/feel/etc of XP.

In any case, does anyone know what game is in those 2 screenshots they have?

Ah, ok. I'm not too familiar with the Unreal series (wasn't impressed with the ones I had played), so I didn't recognize it.

Thanks.
