First off, i have no clue of this is the right section for this thread

I am looking to set up a tuch-screen login, that records the sign in/out times of students when the tapp on their name/pic

I am hopping to have the alfabet, and after the select the letter their name starts with the get a list of names/pics of all the students with the choosen letter.

if anyone can give me any information on how to get something like this to work please give me some leads

This could potentially be done with onBoard, using a custom keyboard layout where the letters would lead to lists of names on other keyboard 'layers', though it would require some hacking. A simple onBoard/python script would then feed the user name and password into GDM. I've not yet tried running onBoard on top of GDM.

This sourt of work might also lead to a solution of the problem of how to allow an on-screen keyboard user to log in securely at GDM (with the assumption that someone else might be looking at the screen as well).

maybe i didnt give as much details as i should of, i dont mean log-into the computer i mean, when the student arrives at school they tap their name(it records the time) then before they leave the sign-out, the the computer totals the amount of time they . spent at school, plus i would want a print out butten that prints out a summerized version soo a staff member could call role durring a fire drill.

Sound more like classroom management than accessibility feature. There are some people over at Edubuntu working on this kind of thing. See: http://edubuntu.org/ https://wiki.edubuntu.org/EdubuntuWiki and #edubuntu on irc.freenode

I am a little confused here, this would be recording students times like a punch card more or less, wouldnt you want it to be as secure as possible to avoid other students screwing around with it?

Some schools uses it for their teaching.. It's much better than writing on a black borad. Very organized.
