I have a computer with a 20gb hard drive, I recently bought a 250gb hard drive, put it in as a slave and partitioned it to 2 ext3 partitions.

I hadn't done anything with them yet though.

So I was quite suprised to find out that my root drive has 55gb capacity and is mounted from /dev/disk1s3 instead of good old /dev/hda1

what is going on? and should I be worried if ubuntu has started using my new hard drive without asking me?

Thats odd. No one else using your machine? Are you an ambien user? Maybe you were sleep mounting.
