View Full Version : What Edgy Eft should look like..."a Breathe of fresh air"

I was sitting here tonight overgoing osdir.com and came across Knot 3 screenshots for Edgy Eft. I was impressed with the improvements of the graphical resolution while booting (finally.)

I have a few ideas, however, on what the Ubuntu desktop should really look like. Even though Ubuntu should be a milestone in processing and development, the graphics of Ubuntu could really use a big boost. Here's what I think could bring a breathe of fresh air to Ubuntu. The images will have to be opened in a new window to avoid clutter in the topic.

Before:
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6969/theoldqo3.th.jpg (http://img227.imageshack.us/my.php?image=theoldqo3.jpg)
After:
http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/6785/thenewij5.th.jpg (http://img215.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thenewij5.jpg)

A breath of fresh air. First off, I'm not sure if the Kernel can isplay Transparentcy like this, but on the "Before", you're notice transparent edges. If alpha blending cannot be done, I can change it to this instead:

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/5909/thenew2yb8.th.jpg (http://img180.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thenew2yb8.jpg)

It looses a bit of the glass look, but still looks great nonetheless. I hope something like this can be done. Add in Compiz, and Ubuntu could easily draw more users in. Compiz did that for me, even if going through painstaking steps (which weren't THAT hard), it was worth it and the result is beautiful.

The background was originally blue, but Ubuntu uses an orange color. The background was made by me with Swift3D. If anyone wants the background, let me know. I'll post the blue and orange versions.

And lastly, the startup screen. I like how developers finally made a 1024x768 resolution boot up screen. It's really breathing fresh life into Ubuntu. But the look is a bit boxy, but looks great nonetheless. Here's what I think it should look like...

Before:
http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/3379/theoldbootnv8.th.jpg (http://img206.imageshack.us/my.php?image=theoldbootnv8.jpg)
After:
http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/6867/thenewbootew4.th.jpg (http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thenewbootew4.jpg)

The new boot image will have to have a color reduction, just a wild guess. However, the "Glass" Human Circle logo in this one shouldn't have to be used, but stick to a dark background and circle of friends with the ubuntu name logo.

Just some ideas I thought I would throw everyone's way. What do you think?

Oh yeah, the glass effect for the Human Circle logo took me a crazy amount of time. I felt going to a 3D modeling program was a dumb idea.

the current splash-screen is just a placeholder until they finalize the new splash.

Now if only we could have the ripples in the login screen Moving while the rectangle remained transparent >: D . but i guess that wont happen even with compiz since it wont be fully loaded yet ? im not sure.... but would be awesome if that was possible.

I like. On the startup screens... the before one..... i dont mine the brown color but if they are going to make it brown like that they need to make the progress bar darker for more contrast at least.

looks good, although I never really was *that* big of a fan of the bootsplash image....but having text scroll by never bugged me the way it does other users.

Going against the grain here, but I don't like most of it. I don't mind the first one, the others really don't do anything for me though. =\

Same here. Just a matter of personal taste.

Err .. looks nice BUT :)

- Make sure your usplash image is in 256 colors -> same palette for each image.
- Your gsplash looks very nice but isn't really possible since a full image ( 1280*1024 or even bigger ) will take lots of time to load and when it is actually loaded, the gnome-desktop will be loaded too :)
- Also, since you are making a gsplash .. make a GDM based on it .. same background/box ..
- As wallpaper you could provide a slightly edited version of your current gsplash' background.

I suggest you join/suggest this to the art team.

Without further ado...Desktop Wallpapers. I've pretty much nailed down the common resolutions.

I made a new usplash theme here (http://www.morozzo.co.uk/usplash-theme-ubuntu_0.1-1_i386.deb)

If, like me you end up with the whole image offset on the screen you may like it. It's loosely based on ideas in this thread, let me know what you think. :)

well, I like the black/dark grey things... But that ripple effect... It is very disturbing for my eyes. Too much movement going on. I like the edgy sketch ones a whole lot better, they are smooth and pleasant to look at.

Well, to tell you guys the truht the image is originally 1650x1050 (Which means the 1600x1200 is streched a bit) so, I'll go back in to the original render (which is somewhere around 4000 pixels wide and 3000 pixels tall) and get it going.

Mr_Congeniality

Ok I lied, it's 3000 Pixels wide and 2250 Pixels Tall.

There will still be changes in the future.

I personally don't like the purple. Go green or green/black or even Ubuntu colours. have a look at the Sabayon Linux Desktop colours, really nice.

Hmm, I already have a good 'green' thing going on over here (kind of a Kubuntu/SUSE cross-breed, not bad). Only thing I really liked on those pages was the hibernate function, which would be nice (if my PC is up to it).
