I know very little about asterix but have lots of experience with Cisco callmanger (It aint cheap).

Open source routing i hope to god takes over the world. I like cisco products personally, but any monopoloy in any industry bothers me.

I agree on the monopoly part. There is also Juniper but they don't seem to have as many products/markets covered as cisco. I've never used Junos (based on FreeBSD) but I've heard it is a better product than IOS. I would not even consider Huawei as they make crap.

The problem with opensource routing/switching etc is that it is also pretty dependant on the hardware. A normal PC platform simply wont do the job. You'll have to look at Open Source hardware platforms as well but who's going to opensource their hardware design.
