hi, i want to try a mainly text based DE, i don't mean text based configuration, but something which uses mainly text or cli.

i just want to run it on an old box to get me more familiar with Linux. so some kind of GUI when it's needed would be great, but i actually think i might like using more CLI.

is that what Screen and/or Ratpoison are? if so which should i try out first? or is there something else? thanks.

Check out the other thread (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=252315) on the front page about ion.

I have not tried Ratpoison or Screen but a friend of mine uses only ion so I just wanted to tip you about that! :D

I just googled it and found this (http://www.linuxgangster.org/modules.php?name=Content&file=viewarticle&id=33) on linuxgangsters, whatever that is.

thanks for the help graabein and croak :) i think i'm going to reinstall arch and maybe put WMII on it. last time i installed arch i installed gnome then spent a day setting everything up, then i installed Dapper and formatted arch by mistake :(

i'll have look at the arch install guide again to get myself familiar with it then try and get WMII working with it tomorrow

EDIT i think i'll try it with Dapper first  is WMII in the Dapper repos?

i was looking through the screenshots and one of them said to configure WMII you have to rewrite the source code which is written in C.

i also saw this screenshot and read the IRC bit, i'll have to remember that bots name so i don't end up talking to it when everyone else is idling

There's two different wm, dwm which is the one that you need to edit the source code and wmii, which you can easily edit. dwm is the new wm created by the creator of wmii. I don't think he is working on wmii anymore but other people are.

dwm is the window manager written for himself more than anything else, with even less functionality than wmii.
It can switch desktops AFAIK, but that appears to be it, although he does appear to have written a root menu for it.
