Two important events take place each September:

Talk Like a Pirate Day (http://www.talklikeapirate.com/piratehome.html)
Software Freedom Day (http://softwarefreedomday.org/). Every day deserves a little “Yaaarrrr!”, as far as we’re concerned, so we turn our attention to Software Freedom Day, instead.
The Software Freedom Day website explains (http://softwarefreedomday.org/about) it best:

Software Freedom Day is a worldwide celebration of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Our goal in this celebration is to educate the worldwide public about of the benefits of using high quality FOSS in education, in government, at home, and in business — in short, everywhere!
Teams around the world, organise local events to promote and celebrate software freedom. The more people we can get involved in free software, the better!
Find your local team (http://softwarefreedomday.org/teams) and celebrate software freedom this coming Saturday, the 16th of September!
