I'm looking for an audio player with a flash expansion slot and Ogg support. Any ideas?

Sounds nice, but around a year ago I read something about .ogg being too computationally intensive compared to .mp3, so the portable player makers weren't interested as it would be problematic in terms of battery life and performance.

True? I haven't the slightest idea, but it that was the claim.

Having noticed in my own search that there weren't any I could find, there might be something to it.

Some iAudio (COWON) (http://www.cowonamerica.com/) players support Ogg, but I don't think any have expansion. On the other side of the coin, Sandisk (http://sandisk.com/Music/Default.aspx) players have expansion, but no Ogg.

So, I don't know either. Can't you just get a 60 gig X5 (http://www.cowonamerica.com/products/iaudio/x5/)? Or would that not be enough? ;)

the iAudio says it has "ogg" support

Does that mean all ogg formats, or just vorbis, or vorbis and theora, or what?

Just Vorbis. There's no mention of Ogg in the video section of the specs page.

If you want an expandable, ogg capable audio player the best place to start would be at Rockbox (http://www.rockbox.org/).

Rockbox is an open source replacement firmware for mp3 players. It runs on a number of different models:

* Archos: Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder, Recorder V2 and Ondio
* iriver: H100 and H300 series
* iriver: H10 series
* Apple: iPod 4th gen (grayscale and color), 5th gen (Video), Nano and Mini 1st/2nd gen
* iAudio: X5 (including X5V and X5L)
* Additional models are in development

The Archos can't play ogg but the others can, here's a link to the features on the different Rockbox builds: Key Features of Rockbox (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WhyRockbox#Key_Features_of_Rockbox)

The features include games, custom themes, gapless playback, and a ton of other stuff.

I it use on my ipod and its pretty good. It skips on high bit rate AAC files, but this should be fixed soon.

This a pic of the theme I use http://solutions-i.org/julius/images/jbg6a.bmp

How does "expandable" fit in there?

Expandable in that the developers or constantly adding new features, and others are making plugins.

You also don't have to upgrade your device to get new features, like gapless playback for the ipod. The ability to have more codecs then you start off with is another thing you won't find in many mp3 players.

With rockbox you can update your firmware like you update an os,
and you can tailor it to suit your needs by using or not using certain plugins.

And nothing beats the drag and drop of music files right onto the player, No need for itunes.

Edit: My bad I that you said expandable :oops:

Though the Sandisk Sansa doesn't support Vorbis, Rockbox might eventually run on the Sansa. Development is still in the very early stages, though, so I wouldn't buy one just yet. There's no knowing how long the port will take.

the themes for the black and white ipods are REALLY ugly... but if you can stand it then it works fine.

Not all of them are ugly, the jBlackGlass themes (http://www.rockbox.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/WpsIpod5g#j_BlackGlass_Themes) are especially nice
