View Full Version : Any suggestions for where to get free web space?

Hi,
I need some free web space to upload family photos for the family members overseas to be able to view them. My personal space with my ISP is used for work and I want to keep it separate.

There seem to be many services on offer but I guess a lot are poor quality and/or unreliable. I don't mind the site having advertising - after all that's probably needed to make it free to me! But the advertising would have to be "family-friendly". And of course it would have to be secure.

Have you any suggestions?
Thanks!

I like Box.net (http://box.net/). You get 1GB of storage space and there aren't any obnoxious ads, atleast with AdBlock on :)

Once you're there you can make some of your folders public for others to see. They can browse thumbnails of photos, listen to mp3's on the site and even download whole folders as zips. I like it a lot :D

Quick replies and great ideas - thanks! I've already signed up to Box.net after I got the first reply from SlugO. I then got Klaidas' post and that service looks good too. Suddenly I've gone from a lot of unknowns to two good-looking choices - Thanks!

I believe that Yahoo is now generally free for photos and can have them hotlinked, though the sizes are automatically reduced.

What I should like to find is a simple source of some raw storage with no front-end or other "help" so that I can just store and hotlink files.

I'd like to jump in, if I may.

I'd like some free web space where I can start a website of my own, with php, mysql and all that enabled? Does anyone know of such a site?

hmm...well you can pretty much store whatever you want in google base, i think....and you could use google page creator but it seems a bit basic for what you need. [shrug] i don't know too much about it

Along the same lines as the Flickr, you could also use Google's Picasa Web Albums.

Try this forum (http://freewebspace.net/forums/).

They have a lot of good information and you can also request space for specific purposes with specific requirements.

Good luck!

Or you can do what I did which was claim a very old pc which someone was going to throw away (or you could pop down to your local computer recycling center and pick one up for a few quid), install the ubuntu LAMP server and hey presto!

ps. mine is a celeron 333 with 160MB of ram (I got it an extra 128MB from ebay for £3.50). At the moment I have a large HD (120GB) but it came with a 10GB one which would have done me fine - its just I had the extra one knocking around doing nothing.

Yeah, only problem is finding the bandwidth for it, and hoping your ISP won't send you a termination-of-service notice in your mailbox :)

Perhaps there's an Ubuntu repository for girlfriends (and boyfriends) but you'd better decide whether you need universe, multiverse etc. Try modifying your sources list file ;)

You could always try:

sudo apt-get install girlfriend or

sudo apt-get install boyfriend if you like,
but don't blame me if you run into dependency hell :p
