Open Source for Windows?

Guys, since I always have such a hard time getting LInux to work with my PC, I figure I might let it be for now. (Whenever I am up to the task, and can actually configure Linux like it needs to be, I'll be back) However, because I'm quitting Linux for a while, doesen't mean I'm going to give up on Open Source Software as a whole. So. what are some good Open Source programs for Windows? Is there an index somewhere abouts? I found another program the other day that allows me to run Linux programs in Windows. I think its called Line. Do any of you know anything about it or know how to run programs with it? Thank you for your time and patience.

well, sorry to hear that linux just didnt work for you. Many of the programs in Ubuntu also have Windows versions. There is a decent assortment of FLOSS for windows.

Great programs, well OpenOffice, FireFox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, Mplayer with various GUI-frontends... what programs do you need and for what?

cygwin is your friend. You can run all Linux stuff on it, including GNOME :)

TheOpenCD (http://www.theopencd.org/) is a CD of stuff for Windows, but it is a bit outdated. It is sponsored by Canonical too.

Free software I currently use on Windows installs:

Firefox (web browser)
Gaim (instant messaging)
ClamAV (antivirus)
The GIMP and Inkscape (image editing)
PuTTY (terminal emulation)
OpenOffice.org (office suite)

Some Free packages are no longer as Free (in Windows) as they used to be. XChat, for instance, is now shareware in Windows. (someone will have to enlighten me as to the legality of that, and/or teach me how to build/compile for Windows).


My best friend, who is a windows user, is slowly coming aroudn to free software; I've switched him to Firefox, which he likes, and OpenOffice.org, which he LOVES---he actually praises it to me every time he uses it.

I wanted to use xchat myself but couldn't because of what was mentioned above, so I just installed xchat2 (http://www.silverex.info/news/) :D
