Want to add ubuntu to my MB pro 7,1 laptop -- will it work

Hello. I have a MB pro 7,1 (Mid 2010) and want to partition 500 GB for ubuntu. Not sure which version of ubuntu, as I'm new to Linux, or if it will even run well on that machine (Although I did have elementary OS on it at one time, which worked fine.) I have elementary os on my DELL latitude 6510. I think I want to upgrade to the newest version of elementary on that one, and run ubuntu on my MB pro and eventually partition my 1 TB HD on my imac 11,6 for ubuntu as well.

Any recommendations/opinions out there? is 500 GB enough for ubuntu? Or should I upgrade to a 2TB SSD and use 1 TB for each OS?

I have 3 installations of Ubuntu on my 500 GB NVME drive. Two of the installs are on 74 GB partitions, The third install is on a 96 GB partition. I have some Ubuntu ISO images in the Download folder of that installation and collecting ISO images can fill up a partition. That is why it is larger than the other two. The rest of the NVME drive is a 256 GB partition I keep my data in.

Storage is not your worry. Ubuntu has the Gnome Desktop Environment. It requires more storage space than Xubuntu or Lubuntu which are at the other end of the scale.

That document recommends 25 GB minimum. It all depend on how many additional applications you install and how much data you collect. There is a difference between installing Ubuntu and using Ubuntu.

You have not told us anything about the hardware. What CPU? How much RAM? What video adapter? These are also to be considered. One of the Ubuntu flavors might be more appropriate.

It's at least a 2 ghz processer, I think maybe 2.4 ghz, 8 GB RAM. Can you tell me what you mean by video adapter? Is that an external device, or something inside the machine? I've just not heard of that term before. I If you mean a connection for an external monitor then I'll have to check it. But if you're referring to an external monitor then I think it's an HDMI monitor. I have one for my imac and it works on both computers.

I think the screen resolution on the mb pro is fine as well. It's 1200 x 800 I think.

Video adapter or graphic card, it is the same thing. With desktop machines they are usually an electronic card fitted in a slot and can be replaced. On a laptop they can be a card (electronic board) fitted in an expansion slot or built in the motherboard electronics. Machines destined to be servers do not need a electr1onic board to output video signals to a monitor.

A video adapter will have a Graphic Processor Unit (GPU) and an amount of video memory. The more powerful the GPU and the larger the amount of video memory the better.
