What is a good printer to buy that works with Ubuntu easily please?
I want something that I can plug and play - just plug the printer in and Ubuntu recognizes it without much hassle please.
I've read that HP printers work well with it and that maybe Brother brand printers do also.
I only need a black and white printer - can be an affordable one with small cartridges or even an affordable black and white laser printer.
Much thanks in advance!

Go in the laser direction if you need monochrome only; they may cost a bit more to purchase but the toner will be less troublesome and more economical in the long run.
I have used HP printers for many years now, inkjets in my case for photo printing, but they have worked out of the box with no need to install anything such as drivers.

I'd go with Brother myself. For monochrome printing, this one is $120.

For color, I have an earlier model of this one, and it has worked flawlessly for years.

I also prefer laser, and use Brother. My needs are monochrome only. This is the model I have at home:

At my office, I have the $120 one that SeijiSensei uses, also works great and meets my needs there.
Both of these just work for me without any drivers needed.
I got out of color printing years ago. If I need something produced in color, I go to the local office supply store with my USB and plug it in one of their Konica Minolta machines.

I am very happy with this printer from a year or two ago. Small toner cartridge that came with printer lasted a for over a year with my limited use. New $45 cartridge says 3000 pages and is less expensive that HP's ink which does not last long.
Brother HL-L2390DW
Looks like it now is about $150

In the past, I went with Canon, HP, and Brother.
I got burned once, but buying a Lexor. They have limited support Linux for their commercial printer, and very little support for their consumer printers. I ended up havig to reboot into Windows just to print my documents.
Most of the time with Ink-Jets, the major long-term cost is in the print cartridges. And if you don't keep up with printing or occasionally cleaning the print heads, then you end up with a full print cartridge that is unusable...
My latest choice has been with an Epson Eco Tank printer (ET-2760). I love it. Very little upkeep. Long-term costs are very little.

I've had considerable success with HP and Epson in an office setting. The network capable ones advertise over Avahi/Bonjour and get automatically picked up by CUPS.

I have a Brother MFCL-8600CDW, I don't think they make it anymore but it is a laser color printer and once I downloaded the drivers for it from the Brother website, CUPS recognized it with no problems. I just followed their instructions on installing the drivers with no problems, my point being that you can use a color laser printer with Ubuntu with no problems. Good luck on your search.

I have a Brother multi-function laser MFC-7360N (no longer sold) that I have owned for years. Never had any issue with it. It was manufactured before the driverless era of printers, but if I were to buy another printer, I would strongly consider a Brother MFC laser.
Totally agree with earlier negative comments about inkjets; if color not needed, don't get it.
