No option to erase disk and install ubuntu?

I have created a boot image on a USB memory stick.

The desktop PC boots up just fine from the USB.

I click on the "Install Ubuntu" and walk through the installation steps.

However, after the "normal installation" step, I do not get an option to "erase disk and install ubuntu" as seen on videos.

Instead, it goes to the "Installation Type" screen, but there are no partitions to select. The "device for bootloader installation" is /dev/sda

Selecting "Install Now" at this point produces a "No Root File System is Defined" error. It says to correct this on the partition menu but there are no partitions.

Hence, my installation cannot proceed.

Post more info on the computer as asked above, information such as how old/new the computer is, number of drives, are the drives blank or is there another OS on them and if so, what is it? What you described often happens with a newer version of windows on the computer which is hibernated. As to the no root filesystem defined error, you won't be able to do that until you have drives/partitions showing and when you do, it will be the Mount point shown on screen where you select: /

I've wiped the disk - only the barebones windows (10) OS remains
It has one HDD
The intention was to only have Linux on the machine (not run both W10 and Linux)...but I can be flexible.

No, the drive has to be visible before you can install Ubuntu.
Did you notice this in post3?

I rebooted to Windows and checked the power settings. There is no hibernation option under Power Settings...at least not for this Desktop PC.

At any rate, I am not sure why that would matter - I boot from the USB which launches Ubuntu, not Windows. There should be no Windows code running at that point. I am not creating 2 partitions, one for Windows and one for Linux, I just want Linux, and only Linux running on this machine.

Anyway, as you have not provided the system-info details, can you boot into a live session:-
Try Ubuntu
Open a terminal and enter:-

IIRC there is a sort of hidden 'hibernate' called Fast start-up. It is enabled by default (and not easy to find).
Control Panel - Power Options- Choose what power buttons do - Turn on Fast start-up (recommended). You'll probably find it's already ticked as on.
There is also a fast start in bios.
Again IIRC from my last install the recommendation is that both these fast starts should be disabled before installing linux.

I booted back up into windows, unchecked the "Fast Start Up" option and rebooted back from the USB (Unbuntu).

Walking through the installation, I still don't see the "Erase disk and install Unbuntu".

With msdos partition tables, only four primary partitions are allowed, and you show four already. Not sure what the installer can do in that situation except erase everything. You need to get an extended partition, make one of the existing ones an extended and add logical parrtitions there.

These partitions were established for Windows.

Shouldn't the disk be formatted for Linux (Ext4 partition)? Is there a way to download and run an app on Ubuntu to format the disk the way the Ubuntu HD installation needs? I have no need for these existing four partitions.

I never did anything unique or fancy to my PC/Windows/File System set up. When I bought it, I just fired it up out of the box, added apps along the way, and that was it. It's hard to believe no one has ever come across this same issue while installing Linux.

At the installer page for selecting the installation type, choose "something else". Under that, you can select the disk, delete partitions, change partition type to gpt(so you are not limited to four primary partitions). Probably delete all the existing partitions, create a new gpt partition table, then add 1)300MB EFI FAT partition 2) 50MB ext4 used as / (root), optional swap, although these days a swap file will be automatically made if you don't, and the rest an ext4 data partition for your files. (or just /home if you don't have multiple installs). If room, I prefer to make two root partitions so I can install the next release while the old one is still available.

Herein lies the main problem. After clicking on "normal installation", the installation app skips right over the page that gives options to "delete disk and install" or "something else" and goes right to the page that lists the partitions. But there are no partitions in the list. None. Click "Install" on that page anyway just produces the "No Root File System..." error.

Somehow, I need to get the installer to offer up the "delete disk and install" page/option which means I probably need to do something to the HD to get the installer to see it...ugh

I hope there is a solution to this somewhere because I can't live on the "try it" USB version of Linux/Ubuntu and I really don't want to go back to windows

Sounds like you have no partitions. You click on the + to add a partition, but I'm not sure if the "change partition type" from msdos to gpt is offered. You can always run the "Try" mode and then run gparted and achange the partition type to gpt.

When I run sodu parted -l (see post #11), it shows partitions.

But when the install page comes up with the partition table, it shows none.

And, on that page, nothing works - not the +, -, or the "Install Now".

In post 19, it was suggested to use Gparted before starting the installer.

Boot into Ubuntu live session in UEFI mode.
Select Try Ubuntu
Open Gparted (which is parted with Guided User Interface).
Hopefully, the existing partitions are visible?
If partitions are active (i.e.mounted), unmount all partitions with right click > Unmount
Device > Create Partition Table > Select GPT

Be aware that this is destructive and will delete all existing partitions.
if you are unfamiliar with this procedure, you could practise with another USB stick as a target device.

Then start the installation and see if Erase and Install Ubuntu is available.

Ubuntu is used and installed by people of all skill levels. When a file system/partition is hibernated, which is the default for MS-Windows, then Linux won't touch it. Period. It is a safety thing. There are many ways to fix this, but the normal way is to have MS-Windows release the hibernation lock. Another method would be to use the "Try Ubuntu" method (aka "Live Boot") and any partitioning tool - fdisk, gdisk, parted, gparted ... there are others .... to wipe the partition table, create a new GPT and then run the "Install Ubuntu" from the "Live boot" environment.

Imagine, if you will, that someone unfamiliar with computers was using a "Try Ubuntu" environment and accidentally clicked on the "Install" icon. It happens all the time. And people doing this wipe their MS-Windows environment unintentionally. They come here looking for the "undo" key, only to be disappointed and mad. Their OS and data are gone. Extra protection seems to be a good thing, though frustrating to people who don't know these things, I suppose.

But if you'd followed instructions from Post #3, ran the information gathering script and provided the link for others to see, we'd have been passed all this many posts ago. Linux and all Unix systems require an attention to detail to achieve happiness. I fear you will be frustrated. There are many details to know.

I have tried change the device to ext4, but that did not help. Plus, changed to GPT.

Just a guess, but it appears you have the MB Fake-RAID enabled. If true, them please disable that and put it into AHCI mode. BTW, seems the claims that a new GPT was created didn't actually work out that way.

However, after the "normal installation" step, I do not get an option to "erase disk and install ubuntu" as seen on videos.
Instead, it goes to the "Installation Type" screen, but there are no partitions to select.
I've just re-read your original post and something is not quite right.
You mention that you arrive at the screen "Installation Type", this is the page where you see "Erase Disk and Install Ubuntu"
