To try out the voice typing offered by google chrome, I installed Brave, a Chrome browser.

I opened a new page in Google docs and switched on the mic, spoke, but there was no typing. The led on the cam also does not light up which implies the cam's mic is not being switched on.

My mic is part of a logitech usb Cam. I have been able to use both the cam and the built in mic, via Zoom. I have used the Cam without sound in Cheese.

Looking in system settings there is nothing specific for the cam or the mic.

Any ideas about getting the mic to work via Brave?

I may have miss understood this>>"Looking in system settings"
So this may be a miss on my part but look in:

brave://settings/extensions and enable hangout there

and go to brave://settings/content/microphone and make sure that it enabled and no site is blocked there.
EDIT: Scrap the above, this only works in Google Chrome :(
And just tested, works on chromium as well

I think I followed your advice. Only the hangout needed changing.

It has not made any difference to the voice typing. Can I expect it to work using a usb cam which has a mic built in?

I have also tried Talk typer in Slimjet. It gives an error: no speech.
