View Full Version : [ubuntu] No HDMI sound, other sound is Okay Ubuntu 21.10

HDMI shows up on the list of audio outputs, but when I choose it, the sound doesn't work at all. I checked to make sure nothing was muted and sound was turned up to 100%. I am pretty new to this. I have mainly been using windows for almost 26 years. I used Fedora for a couple of years, more than 10 years ago. I know a few of the commands for displaying information, but not all of them. I have this wonderful, hdmi sound system and can't use it at all. Any suggestions at all would be helpful.

Further Explanation:
Gnome
Open Settings app
Open Sound menu
Check Output
Output Device: HDMI/DisplayPort - Built-in Audio
Configuration: Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output
Click "Test" Button, Click all speaker buttons one at a time and they light up and go off after 2 seconds and I hear nothing.

Almost all sound output sources are dead. The only output source that works is the front headphone

SeijiSensei

What is the HDMI source? A video card from NVIDIA or ATI? For NVIDIA at least, you can only get sound with the proprietary driver. Go to Settings > Driver Manager and see if the application installs a new driver for your card.

Along with Seijisensei suggestion, Please give this a shot:
By adding "snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=1" to "/etc/default/grub"

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
after

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT "snd_intel_dspcfg.dsp_driver=1"

update grub

sudo update-grub
reboot >>> any difference?

Great News. ;)
I was about to send you here: (Your good to go so just ignore)
latest sof drivers are here:
https://github.com/thesofproject/sof-bin
and drivers are not distro specific packaged so they can be used with any distro.
Sof drivers work with Intel Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound Audio after additional configuration.

Understood, but your sound is: "Intel Corporation Tiger Lake-H HD Audio Controller"
Did you ever follow SeijiSensei advice and check for additional drivers? Please Do...

I think I may have a problem. I installed Ubuntu 20.04.3 and I installed Ubuntu 22.04 Beta and Fedora 35. All OS's had the same problem.
So I dug out a HDMI 2.0 cable, instead of the display-port cable and all sound was normal.
It looks like I have a defective display-port cable.

ubuntu-drivers devices displays nothing.
sudo ubuntu-drivers devices displays nothing
