I used to always upload VLC on my machine after installing Ubuntu because of the EQ on it. I'm hard of hearing and needs lots of treble and less bass (typical of older users I'm 61 who have hearing issues), however, today I stumbled upon an easy, cut-and-paste set of instructions to get EQ onto Rhythmbox, and guess what? The sound is higher quality than VLC, once you add the EQ. Rhythmbox is now my main music player. Wish I had known that years ago. Hope this works for you. Here's what I copied into my terminal.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fossfreedom/rhythmbox-plugins
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-plugin-equalizer

It was a no-brainer. (I prefer using default or standard-install packages when possible.) Anyway, the sound is just plain hot!
