What is the red dot next to the icons in Favorites on my 18.04 desktop?

Stupid question but I find nothing online and I can't figure out why they are appearing. Firefox, Virtualbox, and the icon for my running virtual guest all have a red dot next to them. Why?

**Edit** Yes, it does appear to be a stupid question, it looks like that is telling me which programs are running... yikes.

I would have sworn it was a white dot. More than once I have shutdown the OS and left a Libreoffice document open. Not a nice thing to do. Memo to self: check for red dots before shutting down the OS.
