I just upgraded to Ubuntu version 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa, which caused several weird files to appear on my desktop. Their names are:

.desktop
.desktop (1)
.desktop (2)
.desktop (3)
.desktop (4)
.desktop (5)

What are these? Can I safely delete them?

.desktop files are the launcher files for applications.
Anything on the desktop is in the Desktop folder in the Files application.
The names posted seem like copies.

You might want to take a look at the contents of the files, or at least one of the files.
it should just be a text file, but .desktop file might not open or give an option to open the text editor or viewer.
Best to open the text editor, gedit, and use the Open option to navigate to the Desktop folder and open it from there to see the contents.

Hmm, how curious! I used my text editor to confirm that all of these .desktop files just pointed to web sites I had visited recently. Not sure how they got created, but now I know I can just delete them.

Thank you :-)
