How can I get gnome as my desktop environment? I installed Ubuntu 20.04 today on a drive and of course it has the default desktop environment that I really do not care for, a bunch of icons in panels etc. I want the Gnome desktop look that used to be the default. I used synaptic to install the gnome desktop but when I log out there is no option for any desktop choice just the usual enter my password and get logged into the default modern icon panels desktop.

Welcome.

Ubuntu 20.04 comes with Gnome by default. It has a modified look&fell though.

If you want "vailla Gnome" instead you can follow this instructions: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-gnome-on-ubuntu-20-04-lts-focal-fossa

Doh! I did have gnome (vanilla) -- it was there in the gear icon in the lower right of the login screen. I feel a bit stupid now!
Problem solved!
