lightdm - with slick-greeter, login loops back to the lightdm login screen

While trying to login via lightdm with slick-greeter, the login screen attempts to login to my DE, but seems to fails and loops back to the lightdm screen.

In the logs /var/log/lightdm.log i see "Got signal 10 from process". Any advice on what could cause this behavior?
