View Full Version : Thank you Ubuntu and Ubuntu forum

After weeks of fruitless frustration with Mandrake 10.1, I was convinced to try Ubuntu by folks on this forum (and Linuxquestions.com)

One of the problems was with winmodem - a thorn in the side of Linux whichever distro you use, apparently. So I bought a second hand serial modem, which actually
worked on Mandrake, but imagine my disappointment when it didn't do it's stuff in Ubuntu!

So, I'd like to give a heartfelt thanks to tonynewbie for pointing me to the ubuntu dialup howto page (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/wiki/DialupModemHowto) and an even bigger thanks to whoever put that easy to follow howto together. Even a clueless newbie like me could follow it.

You have no idea of my releif after the nightmare that is Mandrake and tar and RPMs. I haven't got around to downloading any Ubuntu software yet (56k dialup only) but from what I've read, it shouldn't be too hard. If it is, I know where to come.

Thanks again everyone
