I have been using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with Mate Desktop to work from home. I recently noticed that if I log out and log back in using Mate Desktop the original user is not actually logged out that user still has many processes still running and on the mate menu the user is shown as "checked" indicating the user is still active.
I have confirmed this by opening a terminal and checking for processes running under that users name.

I don't understand this behavior.

If you're actually logging out it should be logged out. Maybe you're just switching users?

I agree it seems to be switching users but not logging out.
I'm pretty sure I clicked on the "logout" button in the menu.
I can try again and be very very careful but it's happened several times.
I don't normally log in as more than one user and I prefer to logout and login again as another user if I need to work as different user.
If I kill the users processes from a terminal the check mark goes away.

I tried again. The logout button is definately not logging the user out. It is simply switching users.
