Microsoft has canned support for commercial (read DRM encumbered) HD-DVD content (read Blu-Ray discs etc.): http://www.apcstart.com/site/dwarne/2006/08/1139/microsoft-cuts-another-feature-full-hd-playback-in-32bit-vista

...I just wonder how long it will be before Linux can play such content.

"However, Riley did say in his presentation yesterday that the decision to prevent protected HD content from playing in Vista 32bit was made at the studios’ request."

so maybe it isnt ms's fault, but whatever. i wont be using vista for quite a while

I don't think that article is accurate. Microsoft position has not changed. Nothing is being cut out of Vista. But I guess it's just too cool to bash Microsoft. Can I legally play HD-DVD's on my GNU/Linux box?

Bleh, I'm not all that interested in the "next-gen" video formats just yet anyway. I'm not sure lack of HD-DVD with the 32-bit version is going to hurt Vista all that much; I don't imagine the people who buy Dell's with Vista are going to be early adopters of HD-DVD.
