21.3? Aren't there thousands of people out there contributing to linux (and ubuntu) in some small way or am I just stuck in my utiopic view of open source software?

It's impossible to say how many programmers there are for Ubuntu, as most of the development is done in a decentralised manner (independant free software projects). Ask how many maintainers are hired by Canonical instead and then you might get an answer, though I can't give it to you.
