The files stored in the desktop show on it in white and with a small font size. Gnome tweaks fonts option does not alter their size. I can hardly read any of the file names. Changing hinting does not improve their readability. How do I change the desktop font display?

While you don't state which Ubuntu desktop you are using (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, etc.), Ubuntu does have some tools that help peope with visual impairments: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Accessibility
If you want to adjust default font sizes or change desktop themes, a little more detail would be helpful.
