can't resolve conflicts with apt

I have conflicts with apt that I have not been able to resolve: I'm running on 16.04 LTS and wanted to upgrade but got stuck and now I need to install an additional piece of software but of course am getting the same kind of apt troubles from before:

I also have an opopen thread on askubuntu.com but didn't get it resolved.... :(
It looks like I'm having two offending packages: python3-xapian1.3 & python3-xapian which I don't think I need anymore anyways but I'm unclear of how I correctly remove them without screwing my system up further.
Can anyone here provide me some further help? I'll make sure to cross update the two open threads when there's any updates on either side.

First, did you try running "sudo apt --fix-broken install"?

Also did you run "sudo apt update" before trying to install?

I first tried to dist-upgrade and when that failed, I tried sudo apt update then sudo apt full-upgrade but that kept failing too. I don't know if that first dist-upgrade I ran messed up everything...?

You've installed a number of packages that didn't come from xenial repos. They didn't install themselves so what did you do?

The cmake-data is no big deal, it could just be removed..
However the glib and python3 packages that are wrong versions would be much trickier, one method would be to identify all of the wrong version package and acquire the proper xenial ones. It then might be possible to install them as a group.
If you handle the replacement wrong you'll probably not be able to reboot and log in..

A bit of a chore and mess you've created.

Try
sudo dpkg --configure -a

Post the output, that may configure some of the packages and you will probably still have some broken packages.
Then run:


apt install -f
The above command is the same as
apt --fix-broken install

That might fix some more.

You may have to update the libraries again and continue to chip away at the errors.

The basic problem seems to be a bunch of python stuff is not configured and a bunch of stuff depends on python.
What most likely happened was that after downloading the packages do-release-upgrade failed leaving a bunch of unmet dependencies.

You most likely can get it to work if you keep at it. I've been able to work through similar problems.

Hm, I wish I knew to be honest. This machine has been working for me for at least 5 years, I have messed around somewhat but am unable to exactly tell you what I did... :(

Well, I really hope I won't get there, that would be bad... as this is my primary work machine. It's a virtual machine though and before I started with the upgrade, I asked IT to take a snapshot - for - "just in case..."

I'll chip away at it at the errors until I get this going again, there really is no alternative at this point...! :(

I only need Python for Xpra ah now! I've installed XPRA from a third party repo and it is running on Python. Might that be the issue?

Those commands have nothing to with a Release-upgrade..,

So - where you always just trying to upgrade 16.04 itself or you trying to upgrade 16.04 to a new Release? ( like 18.04 or 19.04 or 19.10
If the later, then again, how did you attempt this.

That seems to be the root of your problems. The default version for 18.04 is 3.6.5-3

I would like to do a full release-upgrade and tried it with sudo do-release-upgrade. I just tried this now again to see what I get but now:

You could try this.

Remove any non ubuntu repositories and PPAs from your sources.

Then remove any uninstalled or partially installed packages with :

sudo apt update
sudo apt clean
sudo apt autoremove
sudo apt install -f
sudo dpkg --configure -a

If get you a working python 3.5.1 You can then work through any remaining broken python packages to get them to work or purge them.


I think if you want to "do-release-upgrade" it will be necessary to get rid ofthe Python 3.7 packages and go back to 3.5.1-3.

sudo dpkg --list |grep python3.7
Before you "do-release-upgrade" make sure you clear any problems and that:

sudo dpkg --configure
sudo apt install -f
run cleanly with no errors. Do not go further until they do.

Once you have a fully updated clean system you can:

sudo apt upgrade
sudo full-upgrade
do-release-upgrade
When you get to 18/04 you can probably install what you want.

Your best bet is to acquire ALL of the Disco era (19.04/19.10) packages you've either installed or were attempted to install but were not configured, for example with glib you need
libglib2.0-bin 2.48.2-0ubuntu4.4
for python3-minimal,
python3-minimal 3.5.1-3
ect., ect.
Still don't think you're telling all, those disco era (19.04/19.10) packages didn't show up thru any upgrade command, you either downloaded them or more likely edited your sources in an initial attempt to Upgrade 16.04 to ....?

I think if you want to "do-release-upgrade" it will be necessary to get rid ofthe Python 3.7 packages and go back to 3.5.1-3.

sudo dpkg --list |grep python3.7
Before you "do-release-upgrade" make sure you clear any problems and that:

sudo dpkg --configure
sudo apt install -f
run cleanly with no errors. Do not go further until they do.

Once you have a fully updated clean system you can:

sudo apt upgrade
sudo full-upgrade
do-release-upgrade
When you get to 18/04 you can probably install what you want.

Your best bet is to acquire ALL of the Disco era (19.04/19.10) packages you've either installed or were attempted to install but were not configured, for example with glib you need
libglib2.0-bin 2.48.2-0ubuntu4.4
for python3-minimal,
python3-minimal 3.5.1-3
ect., ect.
Still don't think you're telling all, those disco era (19.04/19.10) packages didn't show up thru any upgrade command, you either downloaded them or more likely edited your sources in an initial attempt to Upgrade 16.04 to ....?

So if I understand right, you suggest to manually download & upgrade all the files where @rsteinmetz70112 suggests to backup to the starting point and upgrade from there, what's the best thing to proceed?
If I chose the method suggested in this post, would I go to https://packages.ubuntu.com/, search the package (libglib2) and download the am64 version of the deb package, e.g. http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/g/glib2.0/libglib2.0-bin_2.60.0-1ubuntu0.1_amd64.deb only the version doesn't seem to align with what you entered above... and then install the packages using sudo dpkg -i file.deb?

This is getting tricky and you could do real damage to your system if it doesn't work. We're getting into an area I'm not too familiar with. You might want to consider posting a question to launchpad, the people over there seem have more in depth knowledge.

At least part of the problem is that python3 is linked to python3.7.

In 16.04 the default is to link to python3.5. Simply changing that link may fix it. Since Python is so important for many things you need to be sure before you do anything or at least be prepared for the concequences. You can really mess up your system.

If a reinstall of python3-minimal from the Ubuntu repositories fixes the python3 link you will probably be fine.

You could try renaming the python3 link (python3.7?) and create a new link python3 to python 3.5 and reboot.
If that doesn't work you could boot into a recovery shell or an iso and fix it. This option offers the possibility of returning the system to its current state.

You could also try removing python3.7

The real question is are you feeling lucky?

Well most likely you, in some apparently unknown manner, tried to release upgrade from 16.04 to 19.04,.
Obviously not going to work out well.

I'd think you could, in some manner, identify all disco packages and downgrade them to 16.04 packages. Maybe aptitude would be useful (assuming you can install it..) or you could just do manually.
As long as you have internet and don't break apt/dpkg you can afford to break some packages along the way.
Just don't log out or restart till it's completely fixed.

Or take about 30 min., some backup media like a flash drive & copy out file/folders of interest & do a fresh install of 18.04
If so and needing to preserve permissions on any files/folders, then compress them before copying, extract after placing in desired location on new install
